How It's Made: Saddles
How It's Made
The Artisans
Precision Handcrafted by Experts
There is no substitute for passion and a pursuit of excellence in what you do.
Each Martin Saddle is handcrafted by talented and passionate artisans, building each saddle step by step using the highest quality raw materials. Unlike anywhere else in the industry, our employees' work and passion are one and the same.
Our Process
The Core
The Axis® Tree
Engineered for Balance, Comfort, and Performance
Unlike most saddle makers, we make our own saddle tree, the exclusive Axis® saddle tree, in-house to ensure quality, precision, and complete attention to detail in each one.
Our goal is to provide full, even contact with the horse's back across the entire length of the bar. Comfort and performance for both horse and rider are our top priorities.
Key Design Features
We space the bars to allow spine relief, with a flare built in that follows the horse's back and moves with the shoulder and loin instead of fighting against them. Less pressure, more comfort, better performance — for the horse and the rider both.
Once the tree's done, we cover it in Hermann Oak leather, and the real artistry starts. Chestnut, natural, or chocolate, with plenty of design options on top of that.
Nothing gets skipped. Technology may keep moving, but the human hand is still what makes a Martin a Martin. Every carved seat, every stitch, is somebody's commitment to the horse and rider who'll use it.
That's what separates Martin. Every saddle is built to make a high-level competitor better.
The Leather
Hermann Oak Leather
Hermann Oak Leather has been tanning hides in St. Louis, Missouri since 1881, and it's still one of the most trusted names in saddle leather today.
They vegetable-tan their hides the slow, traditional way, giving the leather a firm, dense structure that holds its shape, takes tooling cleanly, and breaks in instead of breaking down. That's why we build with it. A Martin saddle is made to ride hard for years, and it starts with leather that's up to the job.

The Finish
Artisan Tooling
Every bit of tooling on a Martin saddle is done by hand.
Our leatherworkers cut and stamp each pattern one piece at a time, the same way saddle makers have done it for generations. No two saddles come out exactly alike, and that's how it should be. Look close and you'll see the work of someone who's spent years at the bench mastering the art.

Made For You
A good saddle has to fit the horse, the rider, and the job you're asking them to do.
That's why we build to order. You pick the tree, seat size, tooling pattern, leather color, and hardware, and we build it around the way you ride. Whether you're running barrels, roping, or putting miles on a young horse, you'll end up with a saddle that feels like yours from the first ride.
